Point:
Steel U-Channel (with parallel flanges) is a shaped rolled product of U-shaped cross-section with parallel flange faces, manufactured by hot rolling. Widely used as a load-bearing element in building structures and mechanical engineering due to high rigidity and load resistance.
Production Technology
The manufacturing process includes the following stages:
1. Billet Preparation: Steel billet is heated in continuous furnaces to a temperature of 1100-1250°C.
2. Hot Rolling: Rolling through a system of rolls of a special profile to form a U-shaped cross-section.
3. Cutting by Flying Shears: Division into measured lengths.
4. Straightening on Straightening Machines: Eliminating deformations and bends.
5. Cooling: Natural cooling on a cooling bed.
6. Quality Control: Checking geometry, mechanical properties, and surface quality.
Characteristics and Assortment
• Channel Height: from 50 to 400 mm.
• Flange Width: from 32 to 115 mm.
• Web Thickness: from 4.4 to 16.0 mm.
• Flange Thickness: from 7.0 to 22.0 mm.
• Length: 6-12 meters (measured, non-measured).
• Steel Grades: St3sp, 09G2S, 345, 440 and others.
• Curvature: not more than 0.2% of the length.
Advantages
• High Rigidity with relatively low mass.
• Resistance to longitudinal and transverse loads.
• Easy Installation and connection with other elements.
• Good Weldability.
• Wide Range of sizes and steel grades.
• Cost-Effective application.
Areas of Application
• Construction: building frames, columns, beams, floors.
• Mechanical Engineering: frames, bases, guides.
• Automotive Industry: chassis elements, frames.
• Railcar Manufacturing: wagon body elements.
• Warehouse Equipment: shelving, shelves.
• Bridge Construction: elements of superstructures.
Normative Documentation (GOST Standards)
Main standards regulating the production of U-channels:
GOST 8240-2021 – "Hot-rolled steel channels. Assortment"
• Defines the assortment of channels with parallel flange faces.
• Establishes limit deviations for dimensions.
• Regulates technical requirements.
GOST 535-2005 – "Rolled steel products, long and shaped, made of ordinary quality carbon steel"
• Establishes general technical requirements.
• Defines mechanical properties.
• Regulates steel grades.
Additional Normative Documents:
• GOST 380-2005 – Ordinary quality carbon steel.
• GOST 19281-2014 – Rolled products made of high-strength steel.
• GOST 23118-2012 – Steel building structures.
Quality Requirements:
• Geometry: adherence to straightness and parallelism of flanges.
• Surface: absence of cracks, cavities, laps.
• Mechanical Properties: compliance with standard requirements.
• Dimensions: adherence to permissible deviations.
