Steel wire rod is used for reinforcing various reinforced concrete products and manufacturing reinforcement cages. This type of rolled metal is a wire of a certain diameter with a round cross-section and is made from carbon steel grades St0, St1, St2, St3. The wire rod complies with GOST 380 and has diameters of 5 mm, 5.5 mm, 6 mm, 6.3 mm, 6.5 mm, 7 mm, 8 mm, 9 mm. Some deviations in size are allowed: in diameter 5% in the smaller or larger direction, ovality no more than 50% of the diameter.

Production technology
Steel wire rod is produced on metal rolling mills using rolling or drawing. The initial blank for its manufacture is a square with a side of 10 mm, which is successively compressed using rollers on several stands and given a round cross-section of the required diameter. During the passage of the stands and compression, the workpiece is additionally heated by friction. After the steel rod rolling process is completed, it is wound into coils on a special machine and transferred using mechanisms to the cooling zone, which can be carried out in three ways:

accelerated single-stage;
accelerated two-stage;
natural air.
Natural cooling can take place either in the workshop on special racks or outside at an air temperature of no higher than +10℃. This method produces wire rod, which is characterized by high strength and good plasticity. The other two methods of rapid cooling repeat the steel hardening process, when the red-hot workpiece is subjected to rapid cooling. This occurs in special chambers that are equipped with powerful exhaust devices. As a result, a coil of hardened carbon steel rod with high strength and rigidity is obtained at the output.

Production parameters and application
By strength level, rod is divided into two classes: normal strength (B) and increased strength (B). The strength class depends on the initial grade of steel and the cooling method. Increased carbon content in steel makes it rigid, i.e. with an increase in the proportion of carbon in the composition, the rigidity of the steel also increases. The rod must be twisted into a coil from a solid piece of wire, while along the entire length there should be no deviations from the diameter indicator by more than 5%, as well as burrs, scale and rolled cracks.

Most often, carbon steel rod is used to reinforce monolithic concrete structures. It is used to make frame structures, prefabricated square, round or rectangular clamps. With its help, columns, beams, opening lintels, belts, strip foundations are reinforced, and also a reinforcing mesh with cells of 100x100 mm, 100x150 mm for concrete floors, ceilings and screeds is made.

Very often, wire rod is used to strengthen the masonry of load-bearing walls or interior partitions made of brick, foam block, gas block, cinder block by running mortar into every second row. Sometimes, GOST 380 rod itself serves as an installation material when it is used to fasten wooden poles of communication or power lines to concrete piles, or to tie a wall plate to a concrete belt when arranging a gable roof. Galvanized steel rod is intended to increase resistance to corrosion processes and increase service life. It is produced by applying a layer of zinc to the rod, which prevents moisture from passing to the iron grains, thereby protecting it from corrosion.
